Hey Guys, Today I'm going to share a little home improvement project that my boyfriend Colin and I recently did. My basement is half finished by the previous owner and I never really did anything to the room down there. It was plain and not much love went into the decor. We recently decided to make the room more visually appealing in the hopes of it adding value down the road when I go to sell my townhouse. We didn't want to spend a ton of money so we decided to repaint the walls, replace the flooring around the bar, replace the bar countertop, and add some new decor. I eventually want to rip up the old carpets and replace it with flooring but it wasn't in our budget this time around. Keep reading to see before and after pics and to check out the products purchased for this room makeover!
Here are some really old pics from when I first moved into my townhouse in 2012:
Here are updated pics of the room:
I didn't change too much in this corner because I don't have much storage and need these book shelves. I did add metal hardware on the coat rack that's randomly on the wall. I should have just removed the wooden piece when painting but didn't think to so I just took off the plastic 3M hooks that the previous owner had on there and replaced the with the black metal hooks. Its more for looks than actual use.
As you can see from the old pics, my couch down in the basement is green which no longer goes with the color theme. I didn't want to spend the money on whole new couch so I just bought a couch cover from Amazon. It was super affordable and makes it look like a new couch. The cover is so soft and super easy to put on.
I also bought a new coffee table and end tables, throw pillows, and throw blanket. I almost bought a faux marble set but decided on all black as it will go with more decor if switch things up or use them in a different room in the future.
The previous owner created this built in tv entertainment center and surround sound cut outs. It does limit the size of the tv that we can have down there however we decided to leave as is and allow the next owners to do as they wish with that. We just painted them white to pop against the gray walls.
We added base boards to the whole basement and painted them a dark gray. We wanted to contrast the trim around our doors in this room since the doors are white. Therefore, we painted them the same dark gray color as the base boards.
The yellow faux hardwood flooring was ripped out and replaced with gray faux hardwood to continue on with the theme. We will eventually finish the whole room with the gray flooring.
We plan to replace the barstools as well we just haven't done it yet.
We decided to go with a faux marble laminate countertop because it was a much more affordable option than the other mediums I wanted to use. I'm pretty pleased with the finished look.
We carried the same dark gray color used on the baseboards onto the trim around the bar.
We added curtains to hide all of the stuff being stored underneath the bar.
Overall, I would love to do more in this room but I am pretty happy with the changes that have been made so far. I love how everything turned out and that I now have another room in my house that I will want to spend time in. It has such a cozy vibe now and will be a great spot for entertaining. I'm very thankful that I have a handy boyfriend that was able to do all of these things on his own (with my help lol). I also learned alot from this little project. Mainly being that I love to decorate but not doing DIY projects (haha). I will let Colin do those things and stay away in the future.
